Ontwikkelingen in tuinbouw
De techniek achter moderne tuinbouw is sterk in beweging. Verbouwen op substraat, toevoeging van CO2 aan kassen, led-verlichting om groei te bevorderen, sensoren. Op de internationale markt speelt Nederland een grote rol. Maar ook in de zuidelijke armere economieën is tuinbouw van toenemend belang. Er zijn steeds meer supermarkten in de groeiende steden en die vragen een consistente toestroom van producten van hoge kwaliteit.
Maar er zijn ook veel problemen. De infrastructuur schept problemen, de wegen, maar ook internet. Ook de logistiek en tussenhandel kent problemen. En hetzelfde geldt voor toeleveranciers van moderne producten en de financiële kant van de onderneming. Deze website is nog in een beginstadium, maar het is de bedoeling een platform te bieden en een overzicht van ontwikkelingen die in gang zijn. Vaak zal dat bestaan in verwijzingen naar andere websites, ondernemingen, stichtingen, ngo’s.
Toegang tot de snelweg
Ongeveer 70% van de beroepsbevolking in ontwikkelingslanden, tegenwoordig aangeduid als de Global South, bestaat uit kleinschalige boeren. Zij produceren voor hun eigen onderhoud en/of voor de nabije markt. Toch produceren zij ongeveer 80% van de landbouwopbrengst in de Global South. Veel daarvan is bijverdienste naast een andere baan en vaak wordt die bijverdienste door vrouwen binnengebracht. Ook de meer commercieel georiënteerde boeren zijn vaak erg traditioneel in hun landbouwpraktijken en mentaliteit. Zij hebben weinig toegang tot belangrijke personen en netwerken, lage status, veel wantrouwen, weinig opleiding en hebben te kampen met slechte infrastructuur, en een weerbarstige natuurlijke omgeving (felle zon, te veel, te weinig water enzovoort).
Als deze kleine boeren kennismaken met westerse techniek voelen zij zich als mensen die aan de kant van de snelweg de auto’s voorbij zien razen. Planetary Service wil zoeken naar en bijdragen aan het creëren van een oprit. Wat is een groeistrategie die geschikt is om te volgen? Wat is de rol van techniek daarin? Welke businessmodellen en welke infrastructuur kunnen dan helpen? Wat moet er gebeuren aan capaciteitsopbouw onder de doelgroep? Daarbij is het ook nog maar de vraag of de westerse “snelweg” wel de juiste norm is. Dat is te meer het geval omdat die westerse tuinbouw ook weer zijn eigen problemen heeft. Maar tot op heden hebben kleine boeren veelal het nakijken. Planetary Service zoekt naar strategieën om daar iets aan te doen.
Developments in horticulture
The technology behind modern horticulture is changing rapidly. Growing on substrate, adding CO2 to greenhouses, LED lights to promote growth, sensors. The Dutch play a major role in the international market. But horticulture is also becoming increasingly important in the poorer southern economies. There are more and more supermarkets in the growing cities and they demand a consistent supply of high quality products.
But there are also many problems. Infrastructure creates problems, the roads, but also the Internet. Logistics and brokering also have problems. And the same goes for suppliers of modern products and the financial side of the business. This website is still in its early stages, but the intention is to provide a platform and an overview of developments that are underway. Often this will consist of references to other websites, companies, foundations, NGOs.
Access to the highway
About 70% of the workforce in developing countries, now referred to as the Global South, is made up of small-scale farmers. They produce for their own subsistence and/or for the nearby market. Yet they produce about 80% of the agricultural output in the Global South. Much of this is a side income alongside another job and often that side income is earned by women. The more commercially oriented farmers are also often very traditional in their farming practices and mindset. They have little access to key people and networks, low status, a lot of mistrust, little education, and have to contend with poor infrastructure, and an unruly natural environment (bright sun, too much, too little water and so on).
When these small farmers are introduced to Western technology, they feel like people on the side of the highway watching the cars race by. Planetary Service wants to look for and contribute to the creation of a ramp. What is a growth strategy that is appropriate to pursue? What is the role of technology? What business models and infrastructure can help? What needs to be done in terms of capacity building in order to target a larger market? There is also the question of whether the Western “highway” is the right standard. This is all the more the case because western horticulture also has its own problems. But to date, small farmers have mostly lost out. Planetary Service is looking for strategies to do something about that.
